Unlike animal cells, plant cells, the cell wall is relatively thin, but strong mechanically enclosed. The wall consists of a mixture of polysaccharides and other polymers that are secreted by cells and is an organized network together, connected by two covalent and non-covalent connection. Plant cell walls also contain structural proteins and enzymes, polymers, resins, and other substances that alter the physical properties and chemical walls. Prokaryotic cell walls, fungi, algae, and plants are distinguished from each other in chemical composition and microscopic structure, however they all have in common two primary functions: the regulation of cell volume and determines cell shape. As we will see, plant cell walls to gain additional functionality that is not visible in the walls of other organisms. Because of these diverse functions, structure and composition of plant cell wall is complex and variable.
